Types of Spine Surgery 

There are many types of spine surgeries to choose from. But no matter what treatment you decide to have, we'll make sure you understand the benefits and risks. We’ll also make sure you know what to expect before, during and after the procedure, including rehab and recovery.

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery 

We understand that surgery might not be your preferred treatment option. But it may be the best way to overcome pain or loss of mobility.

Whenever possible, we use minimally invasive techniques that can help get you back on your feet faster. These include artificial disc replacement, endoscopic discectomy and microdiscectomy. 

Motion Preservation Surgery 

Motion preservation surgery refers to several newer surgical techniques. These techniques treat many of the same disorders as conventional spine surgery but offer some additional benefits.

Motion preservation surgery may be an option if you have any of the following spine disorders:  

• Degenerative disc disease, including herniated discs, spinal stenosis and sciatica nerve pain
• Arthritis and spondylolisthesis
• Scoliosis and kyphosis
• Compression fractures in the spine

Arthroscopic Surgery 

Certain conditions can also be treated or repaired arthroscopically. This is sometimes referred to as arthroscopic surgery.

If you're eligible for arthroscopic surgery, your Mercy doctor will make a few small cuts in your skin before inserting special surgical instruments through these cuts. Then they'll fix your problem using an attached camera with lights for guidance.

Several joint problems can be treated arthroscopically. These include compressed nerves, compression of the spinal cord and disc problems. 

Spinal Fusion Surgery 

Conventional spinal fusion surgery is generally considered safe and effective. But, like any major surgery, it also comes with some associated risks.

During spinal fusion surgery, two or more vertebrae are permanently fused together. Once your vertebrae are fused, they can’t move like they used to. This puts extra stress on the vertebrae above and below the fusion.

As a result, the adjacent vertebrae may degenerate over time and you may have less range of motion than you used to.
